We’re excited to share that Jessica Wainright, a Level 3 Media student, has recently completed an amazing three-day short course at the British Film Institute (BFI) Academy! She gained fantastic hands-on experience and valuable insights into the world of filmmaking.
This wonderful opportunity, reflecting the growing importance of practical education in the film industry, came to Jessica’s attention through her supportive media lecturers. Showing great initiative, Jessica eagerly applied for the programme, demonstrating her commitment to enhancing her skills and industry knowledge.
Jessica shared, “During my time at the British Film Institute, I took part in a variety of productions—from brainstorming ideas and being on set to post-production and editing work. We had the chance to train alongside industry professionals like Richard Scott, a sound mixer and boom operator, and James Harris, who has worked on BBC productions involving script writing and direction.
I discovered this opportunity thanks to my course lecturers. We have a shared workspace for all media students, so when exciting opportunities arise, everyone can see them. My tutors were more than happy to assist me with my application for this fantastic chance.
Working with the BFI has been an incredible experience! Collaborating with like-minded individuals on various projects has been such a blessing.
I’ve gained experiences and opportunities I never would have had without the BFI, and I've developed practical skills and knowledge while also improving my interpersonal skills.”
During the course, Jessica had the chance to work with industry professional Richard Scott, a sound technician, who provided expert guidance on using a boom mic and explained the essential responsibilities of an audio mixer.
Building on the skills she learned, Jessica teamed up with other participants to recreate a scene from No Country for Old Men, showcasing her newfound knowledge and practical abilities.
Her success is a testament to both her ambition and the dedication of the staff in providing opportunities that help students take their first steps towards their future careers.
Simon Jefferson, Curriculum Manager for Media, Music and Performing Arts, added,
“It’s wonderful to see that Jessica was able to proactively seek out this opportunity and attend it on her own. The staff were absolutely thrilled to see her take this step, and we’ve been even more impressed to see her apply her on-set experiences in the classroom!”
