Empowering Dyer Engineering Mentors through Specialist Training: A Partnership with New College Durham
New College Durham (NCD) are delighted to support Dyer Engineering with their apprenticeship recruitment and development for 2024.
New College Durham (NCD) are proud to collaborate with local fabrication and maintenance company Dyer Engineering in their commitment to developing talent and creating a positive workplace culture.
Working together they will deliver tailored training programmes designed to further develop the skills of apprenticeship mentors across the company.
Based in County Durham, UK, Dyer has experience in a wide range of industries including rail, automotive, defence, oil & gas, offshore, renewables and mining. They proud to work with every type of business, from local markets to blue-chip international customers.
As part of this collaboration, Dyer Engineering mentors—spanning their welders, fabricators, and maintenance teams—are undertaking two of NCD's core training courses: Level 2 Award in Mentoring and Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Mental Health Advocacy in the Workplace. These tailored programmes will equip mentors with the confidence, tools, and knowledge to guide apprentices through the critical early stages of their careers, promoting a culture of growth, learning, and well-being across the business.
Sara Churchill, People Partner at Dyer Engineering, highlights the importance of this training:
“With our latest group of apprentices joining Dyer Engineering, it was decided that it was time to further invest in the staff responsible for their development. These courses were chosen to give our mentors the tools and confidence to support apprentices as effectively as they can. We value our existing staff and hope that making this investment will lead to both their personal development and also deliver the best possible experience for our apprentices as they start out into the world of work. The role of a mentor has such a long-lasting impact on an individual, especially when they first enter the workplace. I bet you can remember yours!”
For Dyer Engineering, the benefits are twofold: their apprentices receive exceptional guidance and support, while their mentors grow more engaged and capable in their roles. NCD’s training programmes offer flexible delivery options of either on-site at the employer’s premises or at NCD’s ultramodern campus, this helps ensure that training can fit seamlessly within business operations.
Lisa Waller, Director of Business Development (Sales and Growth), New College Durham, added: “We understand the importance of flexibility for businesses, which is why we offer these courses in a way that suits their needs. Whether delivered on-site or at our campus, these programmes are not only beneficial for those mentoring apprentices but also for anyone leading teams or managing employees. They offer an excellent opportunity for businesses to strengthen their workforce, while helping individuals grow in confidence, capability and ultimately, productivity.”
