New College Durham (NCD) is proud to celebrate a series of exceptional achievements at the 2026 North East Apprenticeship Awards, held to recognise the region’s most talented apprentices, employers, mentors, and training providers.
The evening proved a standout moment for learners and staff alike, with multiple honours highlighting both individual excellence and the strength of employer partnerships supported by the college.
A particular highlight came in the Construction Apprentice category, where Megan Emerson of Gibson & Harris Plumbing & Heating was named Construction Apprentice of the year, alongside being recognised as Highly Commended in the Advanced Apprentice of the year category. Megan’s success reflects both her dedication to her trade and the high-quality training delivered by NCD and her employer, Gibson & Harris Plumbing & Heating.
Megan said: "I feel incredibly honoured to have been nominated by the college's plumbing team and I'm genuinely grateful to everyone who has supported me throughout my apprenticeship. A special thank you goes to my mentor, Darren, whose guidance, encouragement and belief in me have played a huge part in helping me grow both personally and professionally. Looking ahead, I'm excited about the opportunities that lie ahead and can't wait to see where my career takes me next."
In the Mentor of the Year category, Alexandra Crowther of Sunderland City Council received a Highly Commended recognition for her outstanding commitment to developing and supporting apprentices within her organisation. Her contribution highlights the vital role of mentoring in shaping future workforce talent, alongside apprenticeship training delivered through NCD.
NCD was also recognised institutionally, receiving a significant accolade as Training Provider/Programme Winner for its Firefighter Apprenticeship Programme, further cementing its reputation for delivering high-impact, sector-leading apprenticeship provision.
The awards ceremony, hosted as part of the annual North East Apprenticeship Awards celebration, brought together employers, educators, and apprentices from across the region to showcase excellence in skills development.
Natasha Francis, Director of Apprenticeships and Partnerships, New College Durham, said: “These achievements reflect the dedication, resilience and professionalism of our apprentices, employers and staff. Megan’s success, Alexandra’s recognition and the award for our Firefighter Apprenticeship Programme demonstrate the strength of collaboration and the real impact apprenticeships are having across the region. We are incredibly proud of everyone involved.”
